Should we delay new product lines?

Commit to what protects income you have; new bets wait for cheaper money.

Money is available but pricey.

Roadmap · Do now
Keep the core roadmap on schedule; ship the pieces customers can use this quarter first.
Pause if
Pause long-payback bets if risk appetite falls below 44 or two weekly readings in a row come in weaker.
Resume when
Resume the paused bets when risk appetite is above 54 and the weekly reading holds or improves.

Delay a new product line when demand is unproven or its build and support costs would put the core business at risk.

How to test a new product line first

Fund the smallest test that can establish demand before committing to a full product line. Set a customer milestone, a spending limit and an exit condition, including the ongoing support the product would require.

Conditions are Cloudy and worsening since Sep 30; revisit decisions made on the Sep 30 reading.

Compare a new product with investing in the core

Customer requests are a starting point, not proof of willingness to pay or sustained use. Compare the new line with the best use of the same capacity in the existing product. Keep discovery reversible until customers and the cash plan justify a larger commitment.

Company inputs to check

  • Evidence of paid demand or repeated use from the intended customer segment.
  • Build, launch and ongoing support costs alongside the opportunity cost to the core product.
  • Experiment budget, success milestone and the condition for stopping the test.

What would change this answer: funding pressure and risk appetite

Conditions change if: Funding pressure falls 20 pts from 90 to 70 or below, or risk appetite falls 2 pts from 52 to 50 or below.

Funding pressure90 of 100 · 20 pts above the change line
70

Change line 70

0 = easier funding · 100 = harder funding

On this signal alone: Money is tight — conserve cash, extend runway, defer big bets. Fundraising windows are narrow.

Risk appetite52 of 100 · 2 pts above the change line
50

Change line 50

0 = risk-averse investors · 100 = risk-hungry investors

On this signal alone: Markets are selectively open — prove traction before scaling; get customer evidence before making large commitments.
