For startup leaders: we read interest rates and credit markets and tell you when to pause or resume hiring, spending and fundraising. Updated every Monday, with an email the day a line is crossed. Cloudy this week: pricey money, willing investors (funding pressure above 70, risk appetite above 50). The four conditions and how they are set
Your decisions this week
4 of 5 areas are past their pause line.
Each answer holds until a score crosses one of its lines, and most weeks none does.
Roadmap
Keep the core roadmap on schedule, and ship what customers can use this quarter first
Resume line no longer met: risk appetite fell below 54.
- Pause if
- Risk appetite < 44 9 pts away
- Resume when
- Risk appetite > 54 1 pt away
Why this line governs roadmap:
When the market gets nervous, customers and investors care about what ships and pays off this quarter, not a 3-year vision. Shorter release cycles give you real user proof faster—and let you pivot before burning months of engineering time.
Shared rule of thumb: In Sunny weather, ship what drives activation and retention. In Stormy or Freezing, back only projects that pay for themselves within 12 months.
Startup math: A 3-month engineering detour costs ~$75k+ in burn. Focus on features that save current customer renewals this quarter.

What this guidance means at your runway
Showing 12–24 mo until you pick your cash runway.
Pause still applies to Hiring, Fundraising, Spending and New bets: no line crossed since Sep 30.
Agree on these lines in calm weather so course corrections are automatic, not emergency debates.
Why conditions are Cloudy
Funding pressure is above its 70 change line: money is hard to raise. Risk appetite is above its 50 change line: investors are selective about risk. Together they put conditions in Cloudy.
What the headline reading leaves out
Startup-market inputs would put risk appetite at 42, below its change line. If we counted them, conditions would be Freezing, not Cloudy. They're left out because their data doesn't go back far enough to check against past months.
Funding pressure shows 90 because that’s as high as the score goes; uncapped it would be 110. So it’s 20 points above its 70 change line on the score, but really 40.

What would change this guidance
What the three lines do (pause, resume, change)
- Pause line
- If a score crosses it, hold off on the areas it covers.
- Resume line
- Once a score is back past it, restart those areas.
- Change line
- If a score crosses it, the week’s conditions change.
Why pause and resume lines differ: Think of the gap like a thermostat. A buffer between pausing and resuming stops your team from thrashing between sudden freezes and restarts week to week.
How unusual is this?
It's been Cloudy for 1 month so far. The last Cloudy stretch lasted 7 months, May 2025 to Nov 2025.
Conditions by month, Jan 2012 to Sep 2026: they changed 7 times, and it’s been Cloudy for 1 month.
